Weed, pot, cannabis, kush, marijuana, Mary Jane, reefer, ganja, green, herb, THC, indica, sativa, the names are endless for this popular and widely used plant. According to the UNODC (United Nations Office of Drugs & Crime) Cannabis remains the world’s most widely used drug, with an annual prevalence of 3.8% of the adult population, or an estimated 183 million people (range 128 million to 238 million), having used cannabis in the past year. Cannabis use has increased in parts of North and South America, while its use is declining or stabilizing in parts of Europe, albeit from or at high levels.
Legal cannabis sales exploded to $9.7 billion in North America in 2017, according to a report from Arcview Market Research and BDS Analytics. That represents a 33% increase over 2016, shattering previous expectations about how quickly the cannabis industry could grow in the face of federal prohibition.
The report also predicted the legal cannabis market will reach $24.5 billion in sales — a 28% annual compound growth rate — by 2021, as more state-legal markets come online.
Support for cannabis legalization reached new highs in 2017. A Gallup poll showed that 64% of Americans favor legalization, and a majority of Republicans back it for the first time.
Back in June President Donald Trump said he likely will support a congressional effort to end the federal ban on marijuana, a major step that would reshape the cannabis industry and end the threat of a Justice Department crackdown.
One of the lead sponsors is Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), who is aligned with Trump on several issues but recently has tangled with the administration over the Justice Department’s threats to restart prosecutions in states that have legalized marijuana.
“I support Sen. Gardner,” Trump said when asked about the cannabis bill. “I know exactly what he’s doing. We’re looking at it. But I probably will end up supporting that, yes.”
The legislative proposal, which is also championed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), would reshape the legal landscape for marijuana if it becomes law.
